ICCOA/ IOSC proposal for IGO project activities in 2006
The broad framework of 2006 work plan was discussed with coordinator of I-GO project and IOSC in charge at IFOAM. The details on each activities and activity wise budgeting is presented here in the proposal.

Activity –1: Training of Trainers in organic agriculture in the tropics
( using IFOAM manual)

Background

IFOAM has made valuable efforts in preparing training manuals on organic agriculture in the tropics. It is a valuable piece of information material in terms of human resources development in tropical countries, where the institutional capacities are still very weak for promoting organic agriculture. Further, IFOAM has launched efforts under I-Go project for human resources development using these training manuals.

Large part of India falls under tropical climate where the farmers and institutions are presently working hard to develop organic agriculture. However, much gap remains between the need and availability of trained human resources in organic agriculture. It is under these circumstances the proposal is made for organizing a training of trainers programme for people from key stakeholders, specially those who otherwise are equipped with institutional infrastructural facilities and have adequate human resources to impart training programmes in organic agriculture. It implies that if the staff of these institutions were trained then these institutions will acquire capacity and will be willing to launch and continue the training in organic agriculture.

Objectives

  • Contribute to human resources / expertise development in organic agriculture in tropical areas of India
  • Build a cadre of trainers and trained people
  • Facilitate launching of training programmes by several institutions/ agencies in the above area

Output

  • Critical mass of trainers in organic agriculture in tropical areas

Impact

  • The Institutions / agencies of these trainers expected to develop and launch IFOAM training manuals based training programmes
  • Large number of trained manpower created in India in due course of time.

Implementation

For this training of trainers programme, information / trainng material is generated by IFOAM, in the form of the manual and this will be used. ICCOA / ICOS is scouting a prospective organization/ agency who will organize the training. ICOS is also considering to undertake this training programme itself in Bangalore. Infrastructure facilities are available nearby ICCOA office, which ICCOA uses. Prospects of organising it jointly with National Centre for Organic Farming are being discussed ( response awaited).
